The biggest shortcoming of the 3 in 1 machines is the constant setting up and breaking down set-ups from lathe to mill or vice versa. Right now I have my machine set-up for a milling job with the mill vise indicated in.

Nov 05, 2012 So these 3-in-1 combo machines seem to meet my criteria. The reviews I've read, do usually acknowledge that while they "are a compromise of both a lathe and a mill," that they "are surprisingly rigid and capable", So I think the 3-in-1 satisfies #2 and #3. The smithy in particular satisfies #4 very well. I'm taking #5 for granted.

Nov 12, 2006 In theRD gunsmith shop at work I use a Clausing 8520 mill, Vectrax 10x54 mill, Hardinge HLV lathe, and a Jet GH-1440ZX 3.125" bore Lathe. I get around the 3/4" spindle bore in the Southbend by using a roller steady rest. Combination machines are nice if you dont have the space for multiple machines. Also the setup time is a pain.

Feb 26, 2008 I have a Smithy CB 1239 manual machine that I have had for about 8 years. It is generally of good quality, but I would say the lathe is better than the mill. If you are running anything over a 3/8 end mill, the milling head is not stiff enough to keep things from moving around a bit.

Sep 17, 2010 It looks like the Smithy Granite series addresses some of the problems that I have with our Midas (Camlock spindle, R8 mill spindle, slower speeds, ect.). Looks like you still can't get the mill spindle down to the table, though, which is a real pain if you want to mill

Jul 17, 2014 The Smithy did all that it was advertised to do. It was a pretty damn good lathe and the mill aspect of the machine turned out some fine quality parts as long as I worked within the machine's limits. You can't push the mill like its a knee mill

Question : I noticed the mill head has a lot of play in the vertical axis. What i mean is with it unlocked i can grab the mill spindle and push it up, havn't measured the amount. But is close to 1/16". This is on a 1220xl.. Think i'll call smithy
