The Mangrove Action Project (MAP) has adopted ‘Ecological Mangrove Restoration’ (EMR) as developed by Robin Lewis of Florida. Robin successfully used the method to restore mangroves for over 30 years, and there have been a number of scientific papers written to support the technique which uses natural mangrove as a model or reference site .
Community engagement and empowerment is key to the CBEMR model and recognizes the importance of local participation and knowledge sharing to sustainable mangrove restoration. With better understanding and education, huge eco-tourism potentials surface that become beneficial for the local communities as well as visitors.
We at Mangrove Action Project take a truly grassroots, bottom-up approach to mangrove conservation and restoration issues. Our approach involves and includes the voices of the global South, local communities, and their partner non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
Thanks to the success of the demonstration sites in Thailand and elsewhere, other organizations have begun adopting the CBEMR method as a more secure and successful manner of mangrove restoration in other locations around the globe. One of MAP’s main services is to provide CBEMR training to organizations undertaking their own projects.
Mangrove restoration is the regeneration of mangrove forest ecosystems in areas where they have previously existed. The practice of mangrove restoration is grounded in the discipline of restoration ecology, which aims to “[assist] the recovery of resilience and adaptive capacity of ecosystems that have been degraded, damaged, or destroyed”. Since environmental impactsare an ongoing threat, to successfully restore an ecosystem implies not merely to recreate its former condition, but to strengthen
For years, the NGO Mangrove Action Project (MAP) has been promoting the restoration of mangrove forests in Asia. For this purpose, the organisation has successfully developed and implemented an alternative restoration method called Ecological Mangrove Reforestation (EMR).
